I hope all QMS members had a safe and happy Christmas and are looking forward to 2010. It seems unbelievable that 10yrs have passed since the Sydney Olympics.
A reminder to all competitve members to be organised by the 2nd week of February with Sate and National c'ship entries closing a little earlier this year than in other years - you don't want to miss these great events. There will be lots of fun and friendship as well as some great swimming and in Launceston's case a brand new pool to compete in.
Don't forget our officials, coaches and club workers; show your appreciation for their work by nominating them for a QMS Service Award, Coach or Official of the Year award. The paperwork was included with the State c'ships club mailout.
Also a reminder that this year we are working towards getting more QMS clubs up and running with an option for existing SQ clubs to affiliate with QMS and to have their adult (18+) members join Masters, if they wish. We particularly want to see more clubs in the south and central Western regions. If you'd like to be involved in this project, contact Helga, Steve Cornelius or me - maybe you have a contact with a swimming club in one of these areas.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone in Cairns.

QMS is the Queensland organisation that caters for all ADULT swimmers from the age of 18 upwards.
If you are a swimmer - young or older, or you cannot swim, but would like to, then Qld Masters Swimming is your organisation. Forget the word MASTERS - it's just a name. It does not imply that you have to be competitive or a good swimmer; on the contrary, you merely need to want to get fit by means of swimming. If you can't swim, but have always wanted to, then contact one of our clubs. Most clubs have coaches, who will teach you how to swim, correct your strokes, prepare training sessions and generally prepare you for whatever you want out of swimming.
More and more young people are joining QMS and those who are competitive are enjoying the way our competitions are run and those who just want to keep fit, are enjoying the fun side of swimming in a club and as a bonus a variety of new friends are made, with people who share common interests and goals.
Don't wait until your doctor tells you to consider exercising to improve your health. Chances are that the suggestion is to swim because it provides you with overall fitness, low impact exercise and a mind and body therapeutic option.
QMS has amalgamated with Swimming Queensland, a highly successful and innovative swimming organisation. Despite such a merger, QMS has retained its autonomy and we are still able to provide the services to our members as we have done in the past. There are no limits to what we can achieve or offer, but to do that, we need our organisation to grow: in support, membership of different ages, expertise and resources.
The Branch Office shares office space with Swimming Queensland adjoining the Brisbane Aquatic Centre in Chandler.

There are a few ways of joining Masters Swimming. You need not be a highly competitive swimmer or even want to compete, but whatever your needs, our organisation, through its clubs, will cater for your particular needs.
What do I do?
- Join an existing club near you. Our google map on this website will show you the location of clubs throughout Qld or you can contact the Branch Administrator to find out more details. The email contact is:

or phone 3245 1571 - Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The contact section on the website will also give you email contacts of clubs.
- Join the Branch Club - The Barbarians, which means that you don't actually join a committee or club (only remotely). In this way, you can train whereever you want to and there is no need to be part of a group of people, who belong to a club. Your fellow club members could be spread throughout Queensland.
- If you're a member of a junior club through your child or children, affiliated to Swimming Qld, Brisbane Swimming or any other organisation, you could create a Master's section as part of the One Club. You would not need to have a minimum number of five (5) swimmers to form the club, as you are already part of a club. The Master's section would need to affiliate with Qld Masters Swimming and part of that is the National component, which would then cover your insurance as a member. Contact the Branch Administrator to find out more.
- Create a new club, with another four (4) people. It is easy to form a club as it would merely require registering a name, submitting names of members, registering the members and finding a suitable venue. Contact our registrar for more information:

If you cannot find five people to form a club, please do not be deterred by that. Talk to us, as we can find ways around that. Your small group could also join The Barbarians.
- If you're not sure whether you really want to join, then you can trial it first. Find a Master's club near you, join them for a training session or just a swim and if you like what you've experienced, join them. You will be covered by our insurance for a period of four (4) weeks as a guest of that club.
- Still not sure? Look at our Swim Events Calendar, pick a swim meet - if possible- and have a look at how we operate swim meets. You may also swim as a guest, once, without joining. The guest swim must be in the four (4) week period you'll be covered by our insurance. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how non-threatening the competitions are. If you're a competitive swimmer, then you'll have more than enough competition. If on the other hand, you'd like to compete even though you're not too serious about it, or you'd like to merely improve your own times, then the competitions will cater for your needs as well.
Take the plunge and bring your friends with you. We encourage our young adults - 18 + swimmers to continue their exercise regime by joining QMS. If you think you're too old to swim or join - your'e not. We would love you to join the Master's Swimming family. Finally, you may be an active member of Swimming Qld and to continue your training inbetween SQ competitions, you may choose to swim at a few of our swim meets as well. Talk to us, we can guide and help you.
